5 Matchups 5 Days Zero Excuses
The most cursed storyline of Week 1 is not who wins, it is who is healthy. Good Vibes Only opens the season without Burnes, Hunter Greene, and Schwellenbach, all on the 60-day IL. That is three of the top pitchers drafted in this league sitting in a medical tent before a single pitch is thrown. Michael is starting Cody Ponce as his fifth starter. Cody Ponce.
The most interesting Ohtani split in the league is not that he exists on two rosters, it is which half of Ohtani each manager is getting the better deal on. TylerV has the pitcher: a 3.43 projected ERA and a strikeout rate that grades out as a legitimate SP2. Rose has the hitter: a .380 OBP and 43 projected home runs sitting in a Util slot. The question of which side of that split wins the season is going to be a running argument in this league for the next 24 weeks.
Week 1 is a short week, which means SP volume matters more than usual. Rain City has six starters but their pen is two relievers deep with zero closers. Taylor is handing SV to every opponent she faces this week. When you have Skenes and deGrom and you are still losing categories on day one because you forgot to draft a closer, that is a roster construction problem worth circling back to.
Jace Allison lost Josh Hader before the season started, which for the defending champion is either a blip or an omen. The good news is that Ete Crow's roster is deep enough that Hader on the IL does not crater the SV category outright. The bad news is Hader was supposed to be the safety net. Now they are running Iglesias, Estevez, and Whitlock and hoping none of them get hurt. In a 25-week season, somebody always gets hurt.
One Ball Two Strikes comes in as the consensus preseason favorite with the 2025 runner-up finish and Skubal plus Yamamoto anchoring the rotation. The Monte Carlo opens them as a 73% underdog in Week 1 against The Buckner Boots. Three active starters is not enough to compete with a five-deep rotation. Garth spent his early picks on elite arms and is finding out that two aces and a prayer is a rough way to start a season.
One Ball Two Strikes
The Buckner Boots
Garth W opens with Skubal and Yamamoto at the top of his rotation, which is genuinely elite, and it shows in the ERA and WHIP edges. The problem is he only has three active starters, which puts him at a volume disadvantage in K and QS. The lineup is the bigger issue: low-OBP bats up and down the order, and against a Buckner lineup that grinds out at-bats like a second job, that gap becomes a rout.
Michael fields arguably the best lineup in the league on opening week. Tucker, Henderson, Seager, Bregman, Rutschman, five-deep rotation including Sale and Valdez. Ketel Marte is day-to-day with a lower leg issue, but this lineup does not need Marte to win OBP by 91 percentage points. Devin Williams anchors a bullpen that edges One Ball in SV despite Bednar and Jansen on the other side.

The Ragans Administration
Rain City Bombers
TylerV assembled a legitimate contender. Judge, Trout, Ohtani on the mound, Cole Ragans, Castillo, Jhoan Duran. Real star power at every position. The OBP and HR edges reflect an offense that projects well on contact quality, and the rotation has both volume and strikeout upside. They do leak SB and QS, which is exactly where Rain City will try to steal points.
Rain City has the most rotation depth in the league: Skenes, deGrom, Imanaga, Sasaki, Flaherty, Burrows. Six starters. The problem is their pen is two guys deep with zero closers, which hands SV straight to Ragans before the first pitch. Lindor is day-to-day with a hand injury, and Lodolo, Wheeler, and Merrill Kelly are already IL-stashed. Taylor is starting Week 1 without a single save option.

Ray Donovan
Ete Crow
Mario has real offensive pop. Acuna Jr. is back and running, James Wood is one of the best young hitters in baseball, and Mason Miller plus Ryan Helsley is two of the best closers on the board. The issue is rotation depth. With Snell and Cole both IL15, Donovan is running four active starters. That hands K and QS to Ete Crow before the week starts.
Jace Allison is the defending league champ and his Week 1 roster looks the part. Guerrero Jr., Elly De La Cruz, Chourio, PCA. Josh Hader is IL with a biceps issue, which dents the SV outlook, but Iglesias and Estevez are both legitimate closers and the simulation still gives Ete Crow the SV edge. Five-deep rotation gives them the K and QS volume to separate from a Donovan team short on starters.

Good Vibes Only
Busch Latte
Michael's Good Vibes Only team has the best pure hitting lineup in the league: Harper, Mookie Betts, Julio Rodriguez, Alonso, Rooker, Altuve. The RBI and K edges are real. The problem is three of his best pitchers, Burnes, Hunter Greene, and Schwellenbach, are all on the 60-day IL before the season begins. Five active starters including Crochet and Cease is fine, but if one more arm goes down this team has a crisis.
Rose drafted bat-only Shohei Ohtani as her Util slot and it is a cheat code for OBP and run production. Adames, Carroll, Chisholm, and Arozarena all run, which explains the SB edge. Strider and Bryce Miller are both IL15 with oblique issues so the rotation thins out fast, but Edwin Diaz, Jax, and Sewald give her a legitimate pen edge in a matchup where GVO's closer depth is roughly equal.

Keanu Reeves
Allahu Alvarez
Duke Joe loaded up on strikeout arms. Peralta, Sanchez, Fried, Abbott, Williams, Rasmussen are all K-first pitchers. The 69% K edge is the clearest advantage on Keanu's roster. The lineup has Soto and Schwarber at the top, which is elite, but the middle of the order thins out and the SB game is basically nonexistent. Chapman and Fairbanks are quality closers but they get outgunned by a four-headed Alvarez bullpen.
TylerR took a 10th-place finish in 2025 personally and built a squad with legitimate depth. Freeman, Alvarez, Witt Jr., Devers, Cruz, Semien is a top-three lineup in this league. Munoz, Pagan, Abreu, Uribe gives him the deepest bullpen on the board, which is the clearest differentiator in this matchup. Westburg and Holliday are both IL10 but both are backfill depth rather than lineup anchors.

Seth Lugo (SP, KC) — Available. After a breakout 2024 where he posted a sub-3.00 ERA with 170+ strikeouts, Lugo is somehow sitting on the waiver wire in this league. He's a legitimate SP2/SP3 every week with consistent K production and a ground-ball profile that keeps ERA manageable. If you have an active rotation slot, this is the priority add of Week 1. Verified free agent as of Opening Day.
Bryan Reynolds (OF, PIT) — Available. Consistent .280/.355 hitter who touches every batting category — R, HR, RBI, SB, and OBP. He's the kind of wire pickup that quietly wins you two or three cats a week without anyone noticing until it's too late. Verified FA.
Mitch Keller (SP, PIT) — Available. Keller averaged nearly 200 IP and 180 K over the last two seasons. Pitching for Pittsburgh means no run support, but ERA and K production are real. Stream him or stash him depending on your rotation depth. Verified FA.
Gleyber Torres (2B, DET) — Available. Reunited with a Detroit lineup that actually hits, Torres has 20-HR upside from the 2B position and a respectable OBP floor. If your 2B slot is thin, this is the move. Verified FA.

3–2. Buckner was the only exact call. The Keanu miss was the worst: the sim gave Alvarez edges in 7 of 10 categories and Keanu won 8 of 10. Duke Joe’s rotation was just better than projections thought, and Alvarez’s pitching completely fell apart (6.67 ERA). The Ray Donovan over Ete Crow call was quieter but wrong: Acuna Jr. went invisible all week and Mario’s bullpen covered for it.
